The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund is for anyone who has suffered a respiratory illness or developed cancer as a result of the attacks on the World Trade Center.
The world watched in horror when the twin towers fell during the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. It was a dark day for many Americans, and remains a traumatic memory today.
Thousands of Americans lost their lives in the attacks, and as the dust settled, many more developed cancer and respiratory illnesses due to lingering carcinogenic fumes and debris, with toxic levels of asbestos, lead, dioxins, and benzene.
First-responders, rescue teams, and volunteers who helped save lives on that day were exposed to toxic smoke and dust. Those who helped clean up during the disaster may also be suffering now. Even people who worked, lived, or went to school close by may have been affected.
Researchers at Mount Sinai found that 10,000 people had been diagnosed with cancers and 2,000 have died from other illnesses related to the attacks. A long-term study also found that law enforcement officers in New York City have 50% more cancer diagnoses after 9/11 than they did before the attack.
Research has even shown increased cancer risk among 9/11 survivors and first-responders for the following types of cancer:
This area could have been affected after 9/11.
The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund was set up in 2001 for those who suffered illness and injury or lost family during the terrorist attack.
As people continued to become sick long after the attacks, the fund was extended by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2011. The law was named for NYPD officer James Zadroga, who suffered from a severe respiratory disease after spending weeks at the toxic site of the attacks and died in 2006.
It was permanently reauthorized by President Trump in 2019, and the Never Forget the Heroes Act has extended the fund until 2090.
The Victim Compensation fund pays out claims for diseases and deaths that are linked to the 9/11 attack. The Zadroga Act also established the World Trade Center Health Program, which specifically treats illnesses and conditions associated with the exposure to the 9/11 attacks:
Some of the conditions covered by the WTC Health Program include:
According to statistics reported by the program, thousands of first responders were on the ground during 9/11. More than 70,000 have enrolled in the program.
Experts predict that the number of deaths from diseases linked to 9/11 might even exceed the nearly 3,000 people who died on the day of the attack.
The 9/11 tragedy continues to haunt families today. The attacks have altered the lives of those who have lost loved ones or are suffering due to the harmful effects that continue, even till today.
If you were someone who was on the site of the disaster, either as a first-responder, rescue or clean-up volunteer, or you lived near the site between September 11, 2001 and May 30, 2002, you may be entitled to compensation from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund for your cancer or respiratory illness diagnosis.
We honor the memory of those who lost so much due to the 9/11 attacks. We are here to help ease the suffering and pain for those whose lives continue to be affected, 20 years after this national tragedy. Reach out to us to find out how to seek what is rightfully yours.
